Consultant Profile

James Boylan is the founder and principal of PathFinders Consulting Alliance, an informal group of consultants dedicated to enhancing the quality of organizational life and performance by helping leaders, teams, and individuals become more effective.

With more than three decades of experience - first as a senior-level executive and subsequently as a consultant – Jim’s rich amalgam of experience, buttressed by his relentless commitment to continued learning, informs and enriches the services he offers clients. His diverse background includes strategic planning, change management, individual and organization development, marketing, public and customer relations, communications, and executive coaching.  A skilled process architect, he has led organizational redesign and process innovation initiatives in enterprises both large and small.

Although Jim does work with private sector corporations, most of his most recent clients are public sector and private, non-profit organizations.  He serves them in a wide variety of consulting roles, often providing a mix of different services for a single client. Leadership development and coaching, design and facilitation of strategic processes (e.g. strategic planning, business process and/or organization redesign, issues resolution, etc.), training design and delivery, and business team and performance coaching are among the services he provides. His workshops have covered a diverse range of topics, including to name a few:  The Art & Science of Effective Interpersonal Communications, Dialog When it’s Distressing, Effective Team Leadership, Principles and Practices of Great Service, Making Meetings Work, Fostering a Rewarding Workplace, and Coping with Conflict.  He also develops workshops customized to address topics of special interest to his clients.

Jim has helped organizations plan and implement system-wide strategic change, develop leaders and teams, enhance the quality and effectiveness of their services, and promote personal learning and growth at all levels of their workforces.  An advocate of participatory process, he has designed and facilitated interactive conferences engaging dozens to hundreds of people at a time.

Before devoting himself to consulting full-time in 1995, Jim was vice president of Children’s Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, CA, a non-profit healthcare organization that today includes the Rady Children’s Hospital and is recognized as among the most effective children’s health organizations in the nation.  During his years with Children’s, Jim led the organization’s strategic planning, patient/family and community relations, product line development and marketing, and corporate communications. He shared responsibility for overall operations and also served for some time as Executive Director of the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Previously, he was vice president of a private biomedical research institute (Medical Biology Institute) and Quidel, a biotechnology company.  Before joining MBI and Quidel he was a senior executive for two internationally known healthcare organizations: the Tufts University-New England Medical Center in Boston, MA and the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA.

In addition to PathFinders, Jim serves as a senior consultant for a number of well-regarded resource organizations that support staff training and organizational development.
